ABOUT THE BOOK
There is more to yoga than stretching and bending and twisting. In Yoga for Wellness, one of America's top yoga teachers gives a clinic on the holistic nature of yoga practice, especially in regard to healing and well-being. With over 1000 photographs, Gary Kraftsow covers the basic postures, the specific movements of each posture, and how to sequence postures in a routine. More importantly, he moves from form to function, showing how sequences of postures can alleviate ailments in each system of the body, from lower back pain to hypertension--even depression and multiple sclerosis. In case studies of his own clients, we see how Kraftsow's holistic approach has him recommending not only posture prescriptions, but breathing exercises, sound techniques, and visualisations, not to mention such commonly neglected wisdom as eating a healthy breakfast and getting closer to nature. Yoga for Wellness is the rare yoga instruction manual that teaches the basics of yoga while also paying more than just lip service to the original intention of yoga--achieving a balance of mental, physical and spiritual wellness. --Brian Bruya
"This book is a great exposition by a talented author on the potential of the physical aspects of Yoga in its therapeutic approach. Gary dissects the essence of Asana in an easily understood and systematic fashion without boredom creeping in. The specific applications and case studies at the end then serve to highlight the many uses of this application of Yoga.
It is to his credit that Gary Kraftsow deliberately limits his topic to the physical realm, which allows him to focus on its subtleties. For anyone interested in the other aspects of Yoga, his book "Yoga for Transformation" is an easily recommended and excellent companion to this book."

"The perfect companion to Desikachar's "Heart of Yoga". Written by a leading techer of Vinniyoga, the book covers all aspects of pesonal practice, with excellent sections on remedial therapy, and composing sets for specific purposes.
The book is divided into two parts, a Developmental Approach and a Therapeutic Approach. Vinniyoga puts the stress on Yoga as a path to personal development, so first the priciples are clearly explained, and then a series of suggestions follow - complete with excellent photographs and even illustrations of errors. The core of the first part deals with the biomechanics of movement, with full anatomical illustrations of each topic so the practitioner is aware of what he or she is doing inside.
The therapy section deals with most of the common problems people tackle in therapy, but what shines through most is the clear-headedness of the approach. It has the 'smell' of wise experience, and dozens of interesting variations and primary exercises. As useful to the experienced practitioner as to the novice."
