ABOUT THE BOOK
Our 90s Western lifestyle is like living completely on a diet of mashed potatoes, so the authors claim at the beginning of this refreshing and accessible guide to their mind body workout. Our sedentary lives are so comfortable and bland we have lost the ability to "read" our senses and use our bodies correctly.
This book sets out to re-educate, restore and maintain our natural health and balance using a workout designed to liberate both the mind and the body. It combines the increasingly popular Pilates Method and Alexander Technique, both of which are concerned with simple directions for overcoming physical ailments and achieving good body use, and, like Eastern exercise programmes, share the training of the mind to control the body.
The workout is developed through seven chapters: Awareness, Mind Body Breathing, Mind Body--Use of Centre, Grounding, Balance, and Directing: Pathways. Each chapter begins with a pedagogical and inspiring overview before introducing relaxing and enjoyable mental games and challenges which explore the pathways from the mind to the body. It is only after this we are given the physical exercises, illustrated with clear photographs and line drawings, designed to realign the body to bring awareness, control and strength.
This is a rewarding book that is delightfully digestible and empowering. Here is not just another ephemeral exercise regime, but a whole new approach to discovering how the mind can be the foundation of good health. The authors' holistic approach imparts a real desire to improve one's lifestyle, and as you begin to taste the power of rejuvenation, you'll realise this is a lot better than sitting in the doctor's waiting room, or on the counsellor's couch for that matter. --Abi Frisby
"This is a solid book. The information, advice and bodywork (from exercises to tips for proper sitting at a desk) are simple and wonderfully effective. There are exercises, but also mental imagery games and suggestions for engaging with your body starting with your mind.
One reason I shied away from 5 stars, is that the book is a bit unbalanced. It is a Body Control Pilates book with what I would say is about 20% Alexander Technique incorporated. Other complementary movement and bodywork disciplines are also incorporated (Tai Chi and Chi Kung for example), all showing how so many different traditions have found similar or the same ways to improve the chronic imbalances of the human body.
I also reserved one star for myself and anyone else who already owns a book by the Body Control Pilates team. The introduction section on Pilates and 90% of the exercises will give you 'de ja vu all over again' -- as the text and images are identical to text and images in other Body Control Pilates books. This is only a bad thing if you own one or more already and were hoping for some different perspectives and insights.
But if this is your first experience with this method, there is no downside. This is a great book for explaining, getting your imagination working and starting to change how you hold and move your body."
