ABOUT THE BOOK
In line with the latest trend for fusion fitness (combining fitness systems), the premise of Pilates Gym is using Pilates techniques to maximise the effectiveness of gym and home workouts. Having turned Pilates into a household name, leading authority Lynne Robinson, together with personal trainer, martial arts coach and Pilates teacher Gerry Convy have put together a no-nonsense, thorough manual.
Instructions are straightforward and concise. Photographs include cut-out figures which stand out on the page, making it easy for the reader to study the positions, plus there are comparative visuals illustrating good technique and bad technique.
With any exercise, according to the authors, "the way you do it" is crucial. Rare is the fitness book which provides detailed explanations of muscles and mobility, marking this out as a guide for serious fitness rather than a faddish fat-loss idea.
The core of the book is the Six Golden Rules, covering preparation, focus, alignment, breathing, core stability and balance, each with detailed explanations and exercises. These are then adapted to working out in the gym (including cardiovascular work and machines), and the home, with suggested workout plans for both. Guaranteed to appeal to gym aficionados who will benefit from the precision of Pilates, teachers of any fitness system--and it might even tempt Pilates purists into the gym. --Lorna V.
"I personally have found the book 'Pilates Gym' to be a real confidence booster. Nine months ago I joined a leisure club and was put on a body toning program which I thought at the time had been tailored to my needs. For all my hard work, very little change could be seen. I soon became disheartened and avoided weights and machines all together. With the encouragement of a friend I bought this book. I was able to read up about each area of my program. I then realized my program had not been tailored to my needs at all. I was not using many of the machines correctly and was not stretching out each body part relating to the specific exercise. My new understanding of the weights, machines and stretches have changed the way I look and feel. I feel confident in myself and now know I have learnt how to exercise correctly. Within a month I had noticed a real difference and since then I have not looked back. I continually use 'Pilates Gym' as a reference to correct myself and make changes to my program to suit me personally. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to make the most out of there workout!"

"As a pilates fan and regular gym goer I have found this book has revolutionised my gym sessions. I now know the correct way to work on the gym equipment and I feel my workouts are even more effective. If you are only thinking about going to the gym get this book before you go so you dont let yourself get into any bad habits which can be hard to break!"

"I notice that the 'blurb' for this book talks about revolutionising the way you exercise. Why? Because it takes Pilates into the world of gym equipment - a far step from the old dance-based world of Pilates. It was that image that had really stopped me getting too involved in Pilates (as a 6'3" macho male!!)altho it is clearly an effective approach and Lynne Robinson's credentials can't be questioned (I have her first book The Pilates Way). This is a real cross-over book and when you really do start to look at how you use gym equipment like treadmills and weights, it's frightening how it is so easy to work incorrectly. I'm working now to adjust my approach, it's not easy but I can already feel a difference in how I feel afterwards. I've now recommended the book to my gym manager so we'll see what happens!! Well presented and well worth buying if you are a regular gym goer. One moan: the back cover says there is a video available - if there is I can't find it!!"
