ABOUT THE BOOK

USER REVIEWS
"Extensive review by very experienced user and teacher of SPSS: see www.the-sra.org.uk/documents/pdfs/sra_nov_2002.pdf for full text. All point and click (almost no syntax mode) and not enough basic data entry, management or tabulation for beginners, or indeed for most users. My advice is stick to Norusis, but read my review first. Most useful for psychometrics, and those into very advanced statistics."

"If you're a little nervous around SPSS (and let's face it, most of have been at some point) you could do worse than to take a peek at Pallant's guide. As a step-by-step guide to data input and subsequent running of analyses it's certainly aimed at the newcomer. The topic overviews and summaries of various statistical procedures are useful for a quick recap if you're already familiar with the subject and Pallant points you in the direction of further resources if you're in need of more detailed background information. I found these features more helpful than the actual step-by-step procedural info for input/analysis. There are online data files that can be downloaded for free so you can follow the worked examples yourself with the same data sets which makes life easier. Despite this being a software manual, Pallant writes with warmth and humour - a lovely antidote to the often rather dry subject matter. Though useful for familiarising yourself with the basics, it doesn't stand up to the demands of more advanced research requirements - though the author never makes claims to the contrary. There are a plethora of introductory level SPSS manuals out there and this is fine, but not the best I have come across."

"To any students who have found themselves faced with the horror of spss when they had signed up for a degree in psychology- this is a god send. Naively, I had expected more freud and less ANOVA but this book is brilliant- step by step- a real idiots guide that will give you a clear grounding in the joys of statistice before you know it!"

"This book really lives up to its name. Julie Pallant takes you through the requirements for preparing your data for analysis and gives you tips on how to manipulate them. The quick tour through basic statistics is a life-saver that gives you the confidence to proceed with the appropriate statistical testing. The step-by-step 'idiots guide', telling you which button to press next, takes the hassle out of data analysis. You are also provided with a 'hand-holding' guide to explain exactly what your output means. The book is logically set-out with a table summarising the various statistical tests and their uses, together with a basic explanation of what each test is providing for you in terms of statistical analysis. There are also plenty of references to guide you to more advanced texts, should you require them. I highly recommend this book to any MBA student carrying out a dissertation project, or anyone who needs some basic help with using SPSS and data analysis techniques. Julie Pallant, I really hope that you are considering writing some basic statistical textbooks because they would be incredibly useful."
