ABOUT THE BOOK
Lack of illness does not equate to good health.
I wrote this book, because as a medical school professor and a medical researcher, I found the curriculum in medical schools becoming increasingly frustrating for me, with the vast majority of training directed at recognizing the symptoms of countless diseases, and then knowing which drug or invasive procedure to use once the diagnosis is made. Very little time is spent training our physicians in preventative medicine. In fact, even what is usually thought of as preventative medicine is really "catch it in the early stages" medicine (PAP smears, mammograms, digital prostate exams, blood PSA, etc.). The notable exceptions are vaccinations and regular blood pressure checks. This is even more frustrating when one considers the fact that most everyone in medicine agrees that the two diseases that account for more than 70% of all age-related deaths (cancer and heart disease) are largely preventable. Yet the vast majority of resources and training in healthcare is directed towards treating these diseases AFTER they are present, and not towards preventing them from ocurring in the first place.
"Feel Thirty for the Next Fifty Years" is my attempt to make people understand that they need to take responsibility for their long-term health, beginning as early in life as possible. The average American spends 15 minutes a year with their doctor, and their doctor is not likely to be trained in preventative medicine. Therefore, people need to educate themselves and take appropriate actions based on what science tells us about prevention. We have to always remember that once you acquire an age-related disease, it is almost never curable, and it will decrease your quality of life, and may very well ultimately end your life. Therefore, preventing or greatly delaying the onset of these types of diseases needs to be formost on our personal health agenda.
