ABOUT THE BOOK
Thanks to their first big-budget cinematic outing, Marvel Comics' band of genetically super-powered heroes, The X Men are reaching a wider audience than ever before. Their popularity stems from the fact that unlike many other superheroes (such as Superman) the X Men are very human, and their powerful abilities result from a genetic mutation in their cells blessing them with all manner of devastating powers. Cyclops can fire laser blasts from his eyes, Storm can command the weather and disable opponents with a lethal lightning bolt and the group's wheelchair bound leader Professer X has an array of telepathic and telekinetic tricks up his sleeve. It is these powers that form the basis of this scientific exploration of the theories behind the group's powers.
Taking each character as its starting point the authors use a combination of hard fact and speculation to look beyond the fiction and examine the scientific principles of the X Mens' abilities and ponder if they could ever become science-reality. The prose is accessible and light, providing simple explanations and theories and a short background is provided on each character, both goodies and baddies. There is also a small section on the technology employed by the mutants' in their fight for justice.
X-Men fans will find this a diverting read and it is always fun to entertain the possibility that super powers, such as Magneto's ability to create magnetic forces, are not so out of our grasp as we dreamed when we were children. Those looking for a hard science reference work had better look elsewhere as this serves as a mere starting point for some complex theories and scientific principles.
"Dont be fooled by this. The cover looks great, the blurb on the back makes you think this will be great to find out how its possible for the x-men to exist.....BUT........
Its crap...you get a brief history of a fair few of the main characters, the x-jet, cerebro and the shi-iar. After that it gets really boring. Its not the fun read youd expect from an offical book, its 270 pages of basic biology, chemisty and physics.
Heres an example of eeryones favourite....
Wolverine from page 133
Hormones and Growth
"The main hormones concrened with growth are pituitary growth hormone, thyroid hormone, the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen and the pituitary gondotropis hormones. Since new cell growth is a primary part of the healing process, these must all be involved in wolverines celular function"
It then goes into great detail about how the endocrine glands secrete different hormones, the adrenal glands, thyroid glands...all very boring and can easily be found in a text book.
And dont get your hopes up about cerebro and the blackbird...its just gives you a table of features that the compares the x-jet to the real life blackbird ie length, wingspan, height, weight and thats the end of the section on the x-jet. There is a page abotu erebro telling you what it can do but nothing else.
Its really disappointing."

"Ever read the x-men comics or watch the movie or follow the saturday morning cartoons and wonder: how does Havok metabolize cosmic rays to produce plasma and blasts? Just how can Cyclops' eyes and glasses function to hold back his eyebeams? Wolverine's claws - where'd he get them? Magneto's powers, what do they signify? The danger room, what's it like inside...
Then this' the book for you. Every single query or technical question you can come up with about the x-universe is covered here. No stories, but a brief pertinent synopsis and in depth details of how and why.
On a par with 'The science of Star Trek' but better imho if only because I'm a bigger x-men fan than a trekkie! :D
A deifinite must have for all serious, x-men fans!"

"Another truely amazing novel materpiece. This book explains how each of the X-Men's powers would work in real life and boasts UNCANNY art! This book will really bring the recent film into a whole knew light explaing why whose powers did this and how! As with everything it has its faults (everything gets quite old about half way through)but is something worth owning for any Marvel fan."
