ABOUT THE BOOK
"as a learning mentor, i've used this book in the school i work at (mainly with the 9-11 year olds i deal with)
i love the fact it includes some simple steps that lead to reaching each target, especially as the children i work with have difficulties with knowng how to get to where they should be behaviour-wise.
The children enjoyed colouring in the items on their target sheet, it gave them a real sense of achievement.
i've since gone on to help them make their own target sheets. Using this book as a template, they were able to think of a target and the steps needed to get there!
excellent reminder of good classroom skills... we've put some of the pages up in the classroom.

" I guess depends what you are looking for whether you'll like this. As the description says, it is just 'charts' with some 'tips'. I found to be a good resource in my son's learning of social skills.
This book is basically a set of (black and white) certificates, on each certificate there is a big picture, with a set of smaller pictures inside it that can be coloured in, like a 'reward sticker' chart, but instead the child colours the picture in. These certificates have the a social skill to practice on each one (with some blank ones at the back to fill in your own)
So, together you can talk about the skills, and everytime the child completes a task set on the certificates, they colour in one of the small pictures on each certificate until all the pictures are filled in
My son Calon thinks its great, and has even made up other certificates for him, Mam and Dad too**).
Social skills such as listening to others, saying nice things to people etc (more listed in the amazon, com description below) are as important to learn about as writing, maths etc and this can be a fun way of learning about them in everyday life.. Calon is a good lad, by the way, as well as science, music, art, he enjoys learning social education using these certificates and other books.
...there are some adults too that could do with learning the lessons from this book...showing you care, telling the truth, and many more...
I think Calon likes the certificate style as he likes the 'Magical Topics' and 'Dewi Dwli' books where you get a certificate in the back. Like in those other books, I see these certificates as a recognition of the excellent social skills they learn and do, of their work and talent in achieving these.
I understand what the other reviewer is saying, if the book was more expensive perhaps I'd be more critical, but for the £1.97 price, I'm happy with this. The improvements the reviewer suggests could be good, but then if you wish to (and is likely you will do), you can discuss what the child has learned etc together, and if you wanted this extra information written down, you could do so, on the back of the certificate, in an exercise book, or find some room on many of the certificates, or maybe scan it into a computer and make changes (provided its ok under copywritable law).
The onus is on the parent to teach and dicuss the social skills themselves, it is a resource 'to help you teach social skills and reward their behaviour'.
Anyway, it is what it says it is, a group of reward charts, with some tips. And thats what it is. And its a cheap one. With lots of excellent skills.
(Amazon.com's product description btw, is, as I write this review, not on amazon.co.uk, so here it is:)
Product Description
All children need to learn how to get along with others. These abilities may have as much or more to do with success in later life as children's educational accomplishments. And just like reading and math skills, social skills can be taught to children. The 30 charts in this activity book can help you make social skill learning and practice lots of fun for your child. The playful illustrations, coloring activities, and rewards you offer will keep your child entertained and motivated. And they'll help improve your relationship with your child as well as his or her behavior! Suggestions on how to use the charts are included. Skills on the charts include: Listening to Others, Showing You Care, Following Instructions, Controlling Your Anger, Accepting "No," Correcting Mistakes, Interrupting in a Nice Way, Saying Something Nice, Telling the Truth, Saying You're Sorry, and Offering to Help Someone. When your child has learned all of the skills in this book, you can recognize the child's accomplishments by filling out the certificate offered on the back cover and posting it where the whole family can see!

"I had higher expectations from this book. It consists of activities that promote social skills, but I found these activities too simple, short and without any useful follow-ups. Moreover, the illustrations take up the entire page and don't leave any space for creative preoccupation with each of the themes. The activities have very good themes and have a rationale, but I personally do not agree with children executing exercises in order to get a reward- the process of learning and the internal meaning of each activity is not clearly emphasised. For example, in such an activity book I would include the "what I have learnt" factor (assessing the outcome), the "how easy-difficult was it" question (self-reflection). The purpose is not to get a reward but to understand what has been learnt."
