ABOUT THE BOOK
"This is a great well written, knowledgable and easily accesabily book.
It is presented in a very pratcial way and is ideal for beginners and more experienced childrens counsellors.
It includes the steps within the counselling process, counselling skills and techinques.
Each chapter is well focused on those needs which means you can either read the book through or go back and focus on certain areas.Which really makes it a timeless book.
It was originally written several years ago but proves that basic skills and activites are timeless and invaluable with childrens work.
It focuses on -
groundwork inc the room & equipment and your own suitabilty.
building the relationship
the process of therapy
family therapy
theraputic change
helping the child tell the story
facillitating change
medias and activities to use
Worksheet suggestions
What I really love about it is praticality .For example the exploration of the different medias that can aid childrens work. These are even divided on charts to show their suitabilty to different areas and age groups.
It is the kind of book which really keeps you grounded, pratical and aids you endlessly in your counselling- no matter what your counselling orientation is. Definately one to buy & keep . "

"If you only buy one book about counselling children - this is the one to buy. It is thorough, practical and easy to read.
The main theoretical model used involves enabling the child to tell her/his story, and there are many practical suggestions about how to do this.
The authors suggest ways to use different media and recommend which media are suitable for different ages of children. My only caveat is that I have found it helpful to leave the choice of media with the children as this is empowering for them.
In addition to providing a framework for working with children, this is a useful handbook to refer to again and again. I highly recommend it."

"This book is straightforward and realistic in its suggested approach to working with children. The format and style make it easy to read and refer to. All sections are clear and enable the practitioner to incorporate the suggestions into a comprehensive approach to working with children and their families. A recommended read."
