ABOUT THE BOOK

EDITORIAL REVIEW
OCD experts James Claiborn and Cherry Pedrick show readers who suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder how to overcome debilitating obsessions with perceived flaws in their appearance, establish a balanced body image, and enhance other aspects of their self-image and self-esteem. Indidividuals who suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder are excessively preoccupied with the shape or size of their body or obsessed with a facial blemish or some other minor bodily defect or specific aspect of their appearance. They spend hours each day thinking about their perceived "deformity," checking and rechecking their appearance in the mirror, or camouflaging themselves with makeup or clothing. Men affected by a form of BDD known as "muscle dysmorphia" (sometimes called "reverse anorexia") are obsessively concerned about their muscular development, no matter how large and pumped up they are. The good news is that BDD is highly treatable with cognitive-behavioral techniques, and this workbook provides these in a step-by-step format.

OCD experts James Claiborn and Cherry Pedrick guide readers through a proven intervention plan that helps them recognize their distorted self-perception and come to terms with how it leads to self-inflicted emotional and physical pain. Exercises, charts, and worksheets help readers develop a healthier response to their body and a balanced self-image. The authors offer additional coverage of BDD-related eating disorders, explore the special problems of children with self-image problems, and offer practical advice to help readers gain support from family members, medical professionals, and support groups.

USER REVIEWS
"I am surprised at the low reviews for this book. I have been diagnosed with BDD and I've found the ideas and exercises contained in the book to be very useful, although I do still think it's better to have the extra support of a therapist to keep you focussed.

The book contains plenty of information on the causes and effects of BDD and it's really hands-on, in that there are lots of worksheets that will get you thinking and more importantly, taking action. One of the autors, Dr Claiborn, also contributes to the forum at bddcentral.com.

The only reason I've given this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the chapter on self esteem got me a bit lost and the book ended abruptly. Nonetheless, these are minor points and in my opinion, this book is thoroughly recommended."

"if you have bdd then this will be of little use. CBT therapy is a must, however, there are only two experts in the country both based at the Priory in North London, so not ideal for most. If you don't have bdd, but would just like to like your looks a little more then the Body Image workbook 8 step guide by cash is very good!
I think BDD will sadly be a growing problem in today's image obsessed society. Good Luck and Bin the beauty mags...."

"A good book if this is your first time seeking help with BDD. If you arealready receiving treatment, then I would not recommend this book as itwould probably be too basic and you may already be covering such topics intherapy. In addition, a large section of the book is taken up with teststo identify if you actually do have BDD (which is useless if you alreadyknow that - which most people would when deciding to buy a workbook onit!). I felt more of the book should have been allocated to tasks thatfocus on alleviating symptoms. It's great to see that more books arebeing dedicated to the subject though."
