ABOUT THE BOOK
An integrated system of inner and outer health and beauty, Indonesian jamu has a 1200-year-old history, yet it is virtually unknown outside of that country. Now, an experienced writer has devoted herself to understanding jamu: its history, its applications, and its potential for use outside its native environment. Jamu can be found across a broad spectrum of Indonesian life, from home kitchen pharmacies to the personal travelling kits of multinational CEOs. With jamu's reach extending into medicine, massage therapy, and cosmetics, this book chronicles how this holistic practice is used, the materials and ingredients it employs, and its rich background dating back to the ancient Javanese palaces where it was perfected.
"It was the title that attracted me to this book. Jamu - a word that I had not heard of before but it had a distinctive and memorable ring to it. On opening up I was not disappointed - it is an easy read with great facts about a somewhat forgotten part of Asia that doesn't typically spring to mind when talking about alternative medicine. The Indonesians have a gift that should be spread across the globe and I feel this book will be the way to get into most hands. I like the fact that it 'interviews' locals who have been working for their whole lives on something that they believe in. The art of Jamu is truely a way forward and should be experienced by all who need alternative help. The book also gives simple recipes to help us.... have softer skin - a mashed banana is available to all of us and not expensive! Ginger boiled in water for a sore throat seems to be working at present too so I'm all the happier for reading this tip! Although I am already living in Asia I know that I would diffinitely look towards Indonesian for my next vacation even if I was further afield. Take some time for yourselves and read this over a weekend - it will make you feel good if nothing else."
