ABOUT THE BOOK

EDITORIAL REVIEW

It is a universal fact that men die before women. But the causes of this have long remained unexplored. In this trailblazing book, Dr. Marianne Legato--an expert in gender specific health--examines the reasons behind men's fragility and explains what they need to do to live longer.

A bestselling author and Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, Dr. Legato shows how the forces of culture and biology conspire against male mortality. Drawing on the latest research and narrated through the lives of her patients, she delves into problems that both men and women care about-- from why the male fetus is at greater risk, to why boys have a hard time adjusting to school, to how elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol make men more prone to aggression and why they are more likely to die from cardiac arrest or cancer and even depression.

Why Men Die First
offers specific advice on what men can do to live better, including

* how on-one time with young boys reduces anixiety and attention deficit problems

* lifestyle changes that can prevent cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis

* why young men take on high risk endeavors and how to decrease the stress

* how to cope with mid life depression and feelings of emasculation and uselessness

* how testosterone shots can mitigate the unpleasant symptoms of aging

Dr. Legato brings the possibility of both mental and physical wellbeing to men in this compelling and inspiring book. A superstar physician, celebrated annually in New York Magazine's Best Doctors Issue, Dr. Legato is well poised to take on this urgent topic with her unimpeachable authority and natural warmth.

USER REVIEWS
"This is not the first book on this topic. Dr.Philip Shore, also a medical doctor was a co-author of Why Men Die Before Women and How to Prevent It in 2006 that dealt with this very issue.Dr Legatto and Dr. Shore have raised an important issue. Both books are very informative and give good advice on improving both the quality and longevity of mens' lives. Both books focus on the biological and cultural differences between men and women. However, Dr Legatto seems to put more emphasis on the medical, while Dr. Shore's book does a stronger job at integrating the emotional, with the psychological and physical. The original exercises designed by a lay man, Mr Scaglione are explained and validated by Dr Shore. And they do work...I do them daily... and feel great and certainly less stressed. Buy both- something to be gained from each of them.

"I just saw Dr. Legato on the Today show this morning-- and it confirmed what I have been reading in this book (bought a couple of weeks ago) that this is a must read for everyone. Men are biologically different from women and this book explains why, and better yet, what we can do to not only live longer but to improve the quality of our health. "

"I'm so glad that authors are tackling the issue of men's health and well-being. Our culture somehow puts men on a faster track towards death than women because of the neglect that they give to their mind and body. A couple of years ago I read Why Men Die Before Women and How to Prevent Itby an acting teacher and doctor and it changed my life. I still do the exercises faithfully from that book. We all know alot of it but somethimes we have to be hit over the head to do something about it. Both of these books should be read by both men and their spouses."
