EDITORIAL REVIEW
Harpham, a doctor and cancer survivor, offers an approach to illness that promotes physical healing and joyful living.

Award-winning author Wendy Schlessel Harpham, M.D., offers her program to getting good care and finding happiness when you are sick. Having coined the term "Healthy Survivor" while dealing with her own chronic lymphoma, Harpham encourages people dealing with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or any prolonged illness to simultaneously do all they can to overcome disease and live life to the fullest. Happiness in a Storm shows you how to set the stage for the miracle of physical healing by making the best treatment choices for you, nourishing realistic hope, and taking action. But when it comes right down to it, what good is surviving if you are never happy? Harpham opens your eyes to the opportunities for happiness in life despite medical problems and even because of illness. You'll see how becoming a Healthy Survivor does more than increase your chances of a good outcome: it frees you to pursue happiness.
USER REVIEWS
"this book is heavy, dry, pedantic, and repetitive. it contains common sense, but i couldn't force myself to finish. the author seems nice, but she underestimates her audience. i bought it to share with a cancer-patient friend and cousin. after trying to read it, i wouldn't want to burden them with it."

"Friendly. Real. Encouraging. Makes a person wonder why we're here on this earth. Maybe there IS purpose. Maybe there IS a good God who loves us. . .. "

"I have an illness that doctors know that I will have for the rest of my life. Sometimes the "flare ups" get very bad.

Through the writing within this book I've learned to develope a good quality team (my wife who supports me beyond belief, a friend who is a friend indeed, a very good psychiatrist who's doing his very best with my medication, a very good therapist who's helping me with matters of depression, mood swings, etc., and a friend from church who meets with me weekly for prayer and Christian support).

This book helps a person to know the reasons why a good quality team is important, how to develope one, how "my team" helps me through my very bad "flare ups", and the reasons to keep in touch with them. All of this to help me to keep on the road to a good quality life despite the extremely painful "flare ups" that I will never stop having. My team also helps me to keep, as much as possible, a good mental attitude.

I've seen so many books out there that are just "phooey". When I say that, I say that meaning that there are books out there that believe that doctors and other medical professionals are not needed and healing is just a matter of your state of mind. Medical and even mental professionals are many times needed. They can be instrumental ingredients of your team.

This book emphasises so much of what me and my team are doing. The good thoughts need to be there, however, I'll never have a good quality life with my disease without building the good team that I described within my first paragraph. It takes a team effort along with an effort from me (good thoughts-many times reenforced by my team!).

Remember, "good thoughts" are powerful, however, the good, quality team can even be mandatory for your good quality thoughts to come along!

I believe that this book, if read and followed, many times (nothing's perfect) could very well be a great help to many people. Remember, build that team!"

"Written by a physician, herself a healthy cancer survivor, it is both informatonal & inspiring. I read it myself, then passed it along to a new friend who's in the same boat.

It's not easy to live with a devastating illness & even harder when it returns, time & time again. It's a never-ending battle that can knock you down but, with luck, good medical care, & the right attitude, you can turn your battle in to a positive experience.

A 'Healthy Survivor' is not just someone who has battled, or is battling a life-threatening diesease, it's a person who continues to enjoy life while doing that. It's a good goal."

"Wendy Harpham's perspective is invaluable in learning to get the most out of life when living with chronic health problems. Her book has become a coffee table reference for me. A survivor of repeated recurrences of lymphoma, Wendy writes with strong conviction that it is possible to actually enjoy life while living through illness. Her book addresses practical issues, as well, such as how to assemble an effective team of medical support."
