ABOUT THE BOOK

EDITORIAL REVIEW
One of Canada’s most trusted and beloved health practitioners introduces American women to the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine and the time-tested practices that have helped optimize physical and emotional health for centuries.

Since establishing her practice in Canada twelve years ago, Dr. Xiaolan Zhao has treated thousands of women suffering from fatigue, PMS, infertility, depression, cancer, menopausal symptoms and other gynecological disorders — health problems that are all too common in the West but less so in China, where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been an integral part of women’s lives for thousands of years. As a physician originally trained in Western medicine who later took up the practice of TCM, Dr. Zhao has seen how effective the Chinese approach is for her patients, and her book will help American women incorporate its wisdom and practices in our lives.

Sharing stories from her own life and the lives of her patients, Dr. Zhao shows that we have nothing to reject about our feminine selves, and explains how we can develop new relationships with our bodies and our emotions. There is so much every woman can do in terms of ongoing and preventative self-care to improve her health and vitality and prevent illness. By making simple changes in diet, exercise routine, sex life and the way we deal with stress and our emotions, we can profoundly improve our health now and into the future.
USER REVIEWS
"Ditto what the other reviewers have said and to add my recommendation as a good book to familiarize oneself with the concepts of TCM."

"This is a great book for women. Interesting and very informative. I learned a lot about women's health from reading this. Good information on healing and why certain conditions come about. Includes dietary information and a few recipes. This explains how our health is largely a matter of balance and harmony within our bodies and our emotions have a major role. I wish more Dr's. would realize and practice this way. It seems to me, after reading this that TCM treats the cause where western medicine treats the effect.

Zhao found that in some of her patients "emotional sickness was more debilitating that many of their physical symptoms." I was impressed that Zhao underwent psychotherapy so as to be able to better connect with her patients.

Chosen to become a medical doctor, Zhao practiced as a general surgeon in China and imigrated to Canada where she now has her practice of womens health and healing using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

This gives a new perspective to womens health. Great gift book."

"Xiaolan Zhao has written a clear and helpful book on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) specifically aimed at the different transitions in a woman's life (menstruation, childbirth, menopause). "Ancient Healing for Modern Women" was originally published in Canada as "Reflections of the Moon on Water". Although raised in China, Zhao currently runs a TCM practice in Canada.

Although this book does not give specific herbal remedies, there are many lifestyle recommendations that help with everything from PMS, fatigue, hot flashes and breast cancer. Zhao gives suggestions on food, stress relief and exercises such as Tai Chi or Qi Gong as alternatives to western medicines. She does not proclaim that TCM is superior - simply a different way of dealing with issues that may plague many modern women. The key here is balance. Zhao gives good explanations of yin and yang as well as information on Liver Qi, Kidney Qi and Spleen Qi. It took me a bit of time to wrap my head around these concepts, but they do make sense.

I have found that by reducing my fondness for ice cold drinks and foods, my PMS symptoms have greatly subsided. This is by no means a comprehensive book on TCM, but it will certainly get you on the path if you are interested in taking a new (but ancient) approach to your female issues. I especially liked the anecdotes and the Buddhist fables sprinkled throughout. It made the book a pleasant read and not just some dry 'heal yourself' book. "
