ABOUT THE BOOK
"I started becoming interested in the use of herbs in 1999. I literally bought a dozen books on herbs, vitamins and natural remedies. This is the only book I have kept. It is my number one source for herb information. I also love the format of it. Not too wordy...just the facts and what you need to know. I would love to see this book updated and released as a newer edition but still wouldn't trade my older edition for a million dollars. Seriously, it's just that good of a tool in learning and using herbs. "

"One invaluable thing about this book is the reverse look-ups. In one section you can look up any given herb and see the list of what ailments it can ease. In another section you can look up a health problem and read the list of herbs that are useful for that symptom or illness. This style of reverse reference is a godsend when you're under pressure with a sick child.
Another advantage of this book is that it gave me an almost effortless familiarity of herbs and their uses that has served me well in the long run. It's not the kind of book you "read" per se. It's the kind of book you leaf through for answers whenever there's a health problem in your family. Over time, simply by repeated exposure to the herbs and symptoms lists, it all begins to stick in your mind and you become more adept without really noticing.
This book was a solid gold asset to me all through my daughter's childhood. Rather than rely on doctors to feed her antibiotics and drugs, I raised her on dietary adjustments for allergies and fed her herbs and raw honey for illness. (She was a lamb about taking what to me were horrible concoctions - as long as I opened the capsules and mixed the contents in honey. I used raw honey for its antibiotic properties.)
While this might not be the book you'd use to deepen an existing knowledge of herbs, it's the one you'll call a true friend when it comes to quickly prescribing herbal remedies for yourself and your family. The nurse who monitored our slow but steady progress as I painstakingly healed my daughter of chronic ear infection told me that most parents just let the doctors do the operation to install the grommet - sometimes repeatedly. She was impressed at what natural remedies can do for the stereotypical childhood illness. I told her I owed my powers of healing to this book."

"This is the book I refer to first- before Prescription for Nutritional Healing, before the dr, before any other book. This is the book I turn to first. There are answers for many of the common ailments and questions in here. A great reference, particularly if you are trying to save a little bit of money or go natural before using medicines."

"Some time before the "great herb" rush, I purchased this book to use for combatting a few bodily irregularities. I loved and have often referred back to it over the years. The cross-referencing of the book is good. You can look for a specific herb (as this section is alphabetized) or you can look for a specific ailment.
The only portions I was a little disappointed with were the section pertaining to formulas; I think there should have been one for each ailment in the book (and this section should've followed the ailment sections and not the herb section). Additionally, I think the section listing which herbs contained which vitamin should've also shown what each vitamin is known to do for the body.
Otherwise, this is one of those books you won't ever loan (because you'll never see it again)."

"I always seem to be "embarrased" by having this book around, because at first glance, it looks like a very beginner style book. As a practicing herbalist, I do not want to give the impression that I am a beginner, by having this book around, but darn it, it's a damn good book. Although it is not a scholarly, or research type text, it is by far one of the easiest to read herbals written. It is written in a very organized fashion, with a large selection of herbs and their uses cataloged in an extremely convenient format. It's a wonderful book for the beginner, and a great book for even more advanced herbalists who need quick fingertip information!"
